Coffee Is Bad For You?
The idea that coffee is bad for your health is probably due
to the fact that it has negative effects for some people. I cannot
drink it regularly, for example, without feeling more tired and
irritable and stressed out. On the other hand, I know people
who have been drinking it every day for most of their lives with
no ill effect. The truth, when it comes to the effects of foods
and drinks, is usually more complicated than we would like.
In the last 50 years or so, there have been many thousands
of studies done on the health effects of coffee (over 19,000
by one count). Many more positive health effects than negative
have been found. Here is just a sampling of what the evidence
shows:
It may help prevent gallstones.
It lowers the risk of Parkinson's disease.
It may protect against Alzheimer's disease.
Coffee reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes if consumed over
a long period (three cups daily reduced the risk by one third
in one study).
It may protect pre-menopausal women from breast cancer.
It lowers the risk of colon, liver or bladder cancer.
Of course, you are aware of the usual benefits as well. Coffee
is a safe stimulant for most people. It wakes you up, but not
just your body. It also makes your brain work better. In several
studies, students who had a half cup or more of coffee before
tests scored higher.
There is more good news. Green tea has many of the same health
benefits as coffee. It may even prove to have more benefits due
to other components. However, black tea does not seem to have
all of the benefits of green tea.
Now a warning: Consuming more than 500 mg of caffeine daily
- that's the equivalent of 5 cups of coffee or 14 cups of tea
- has been linked to arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). Like many
things, it may be that coffee is good for you or bad for you
according to the amount you drink.
Bottom line? For those who are not sensitive to caffeine,
coffee and tea are not only not bad for you, but they have definite
beneficial effects on health.
